WHAT MAKES AN EFFECTIVE ARENA?
Arenas are expensive in the modern world, and most of the ones we see are not worth the money the owners have forked out. They pool in winter, have but had their sub-soils run properly (if at all), and are more or less just sand or bark in a box. A true arena requires a lot more work – the topsoil and underlying clay must be excavated and refilled with a suitable base material, usually a form of metal, and run with scoria drains and pipes so that when it rains, the water can be transferred away from the site. A middle layer is then formed to stop the top material (e.g., sand, rubber, bark) from filtering down and into the drains – this layer is carefully compacted, keeping in mind what the user intends. A harder ground is use for dressage, and a softer ground for the jumpers to help absorb shock for the horse’s joints on impact. An effective arena is cleverly planned and well thought out, aesthetically pleasing, and overall, long lasting.
WHAT IS INVOLVED?
Depending on your location and the size of your arena, you may or may not require council consent. In rural production zones in the Rodney district for example, arenas can be classed under a certain heading that allows them to be constructed without consent, so long as they are 15m from any waterways or flow paths. If you are in a lifestyle or residential zone, you will need to check with your local council body.
Once you have decided if you do or don’t need consent, we can work with you to plan your arena. Our trucks and excavators will arrive on site once the project has the green light and all approvals are in, and the arena will be completed in a timely fashion. It can also be fenced with BTD Interlock rails and given a gate, or it can be left open for fencing to be commended at another time.
Standard arena sizes are: 20m x 40m, or 60m x 40m.
ROUND-PENS, STABLES OR YARDS:
If you require round-pens or stables/yards, we are also happy to price these jobs as a package. There are many options but all are straightforward to construct and use, so talk to us today.
